First off, we are SO happy to have Meals In The Field back this year so we can thank farmers for putting food on our tables! The first people we got to thank were Richard and Ruth Friesen of Halbstadt! We ended up about a half mile from the US border to enjoy some Pizza Haven pizza, salad, dessert and drinks from Sun Valley Co-op.

Richard entered his farm at GJ Chemical, and Alex Wahl(Owner/Manager) joined us for supper as well. Thanks to Alex and GJ Chemical for being a part of thanking farmers! Not only that, Richard invited a large part of his family to join us, and mentioned a number of times how important family is to him. This is what it's all about, we want to thank Richard for what he does, and he wants to share it with his family.

Our favorite part of the day was the conversation had around supper, and even after! We got to catch up with Richard to talk about how he got started in farming and he told us him and his father were talking about that just the other day. "He really encouraged me to buy my first piece of land and I was really interested in farming, which really got the ball rolling." Richard mentioned it's something he grew up with, and it's a lot of fun being a kid on the farm.

With that, we were curious if he had a favorite memory of being a farm kid, and his eyes lit up when he told us this story.

What's Richard's favorite part of farming as an adult? It's doing it together with family. A family member that is right in the thick of things is his wife, Ruth, who we asked the same question.  What's your favorite part of farming? "The excitement of bringing in the harvest," was her response.

Ruth tells us they usually pack a lunch for the guys and they eat it on the go, so we're happy to have helped bring a break in the work for one day. Thank you to GJ Chemical for making it possible for us to deliver delicious Pizza Haven and Sun Valley Co-op food and drinks to the Friesen Family. Thank you to the Friesen family for not only having us, but being so friendly and inviting. Thank you Richard, Ruth, and everyone that makes the Friesen farm run.
