South Central Cancer Resource (SCCR) continues to support those in the battle against cancer.

Their growing transportation program however has been changed significantly in light of COVID-19. Unable to provide drivers due to health restriction, SCCR instead offers financial support for those making regular trips into Winnipeg, helping cover the cost of gas.

"We do still help them financially, but it's been a hard thing to close the volunteer driver program down," Deb Thiessen, Programs Coordinator, explains. "The volunteer drivers were a very important part of the programming of SCCR."

Thiessen notes they've also had to close their art therapy program as art councils are struggling to navigate the restrictions in place while operating the group programming.

All the while, Administrative Resource Coordinator Coral Doherty says they've continued to register new cancer clients, "cancer patients haven't had a break from their treatments because of COVID19."

More than ever, with having to cancel fundraisers like their annual Fashion Show this spring, Doherty explains they've been grateful for the continued generosity of the community.

"Our funds are lower than last year but, because of the amazing community spirit, here in the Pembina Valley, SCCR has been able to maintain its mission and hasn't turned anyone away."

One such donor was OK Tire in Winkler with an $8,653 boost. OK Tire collected donations at their open house and BBQ last month, with the business matching each dollar up to $5,000. Owner Walter Funk notes they chose SCCR after seeing their work first-hand while his wife was receiving treatment in Winnipeg.

"They were really there for us," Funk says. "In turn, we want to give back."

The Winkler Ladies Golf Club also made a donation of $2,000. Spokesperson Janet Ginter says they chose SCCR because they've had members who've accessed their programs and services and wanted to give back.

She adds, they also wanted to help raise awareness around SCCR as they've discovered some don't know the full extent of SCCR's important work in the region.

Thiessen explains all donations are helping clients get to their appointments as they don't receive government funding. Looking ahead, she says staff look forward to reinstating the volunteer driver network and other programs when COVID-19 restrictions ease.

Another way to get involved is through the Carman Curl for Cancer. Due to the pandemic, the event has moved to an online auction. So far, the event has raised over $15,000. Learn more here.

Anyone who would like to get involved with the work of SCCR is also invited to join the board here.
