Since opening this summer, a growing number of guests from across the region including Boissevain, Dauphin, The Pas, Steinbach and Winnipeg are staying at Katie's Cottage.

In August, 13 room rentals were booked out at the respite home. In September that number rose to 74 and jumped again to 124 in October. The cottage includes eight rooms which cost $45.20 and includes a continental breakfast.

Along with 45 volunteers, the cottage has two full time staff, as well as two part time.

Katie Cares' Ruth Reimer explains the hardest challenge has been balancing their hours of operation.

"We want to help everyone, but sometimes we just won't be able to serve everyone because our hours don't match what you need," she says. "But we want to be there for as many people as we can."

The cottage began with 55 volunteers, but have seen people leave due to various life changes and other time commitments, "and we knew we would," Reimer explains.

She notes volunteers provide the backbone and heart of the respite home, baking and hosting, as well as maintenance and cleaning services.

While the facility has been operation for a number of months, tours and building awareness continue. Reimer notes local ministers and clergy have been invited to see the work of Katie's Cottage. Doctors and hospital staff are also becoming more familiar with the services offered at the respite home.

"It was huge for our doctors to see what this facility looks like, and what it can do for our patients' families," Reimer says.

Her favourite story so far is that of a couple, one staying in the hospital, the other at the cottage across the street.

"Every night he would stand at his window, and she would stand at the porch and they would wave to each other goodnight... that is absolutely beautiful. How special is that?"
