He was nominated by the people he is surrounded by on a daily basis.

Winkler Community Foundation President Laurie Dyck says there were four nominees for the award.... George Klassen is Winkler's 2006 Citizen Of The Year because of his volunteer efforts.

Dyck says a committee made of of foundation members and people from the community decide between the nominees.

She adds they have a criteria they follow to help them decide who is awarded the title.

It consists of how much a person has served above and beyond what is required through work, volunteering with no monetary compensation and demonstrating positive character and commitment towards Winkler.

Dyck mentions the award has been dormant the past few years, however they feel this award allows people to see the importance of getting involved.

Klassen will be honored at an awards banquet in November, where past citizens will also be present.
