Council for the R.M. of Morris has made a decision on what to do with the old Rosenort south dike. A public meeting held in late June saw Council propose to bring the dike down to prairie level in order to mitigate and improve drainage, reducing issues surrounding mosquito populations and cattails.

After consultation with the community, Reeve Ralph Groening says Council has decided to leave the dike as it is and instead use the $70,000 to upgrade the River Road South walking trail.

Meantime, the Reeve says the municipality has always been proactive and aggressive in maintaining its drains and notes the current wet summer is no different. In fact, Groening adds the local drain program has been expanded.

"We have forty-nine miles of drain maintenance on our budget and we are doing our very best with the two machines we have in place to maintain those dikes and to provide farmers with the kind of drainage they need to be successful in their enterprise."

He adds public works crews are working as hard as they can, however progress is a bit slower because of the sloppy conditions.

Groening is also excited about a few economic development projects slated to take place in the R.M. A $1.2 million fertilizer blending facility upgrade is planned at Lowe Farm Co-op and a $1 million seed treatment plant has been announced for Rosenort Agro.
