While the existing SWAMP landfill site will only reach its limit in 75 years, a recent study reveals a new cell expansion will be required in the next two years.

The cost of a new cell is approximately $2.5 million. However, Winkler Mayor Martin Harder notes funds are available to create the additional cell.

"That's why the huge dumping fees are there, for the privilege for dumping garbage,"Harder says.

The SWAMP (Solid Waste Area Management Project) board received the landfill capacity study last month.

"We believe the communities have managed SWAMP well... there's money available to put the second cell in, we still have 75 years left on the site so we're planning ahead to make sure that continues."

Meanwhile, Harder explains they continue to try and reduce industrial waste going into SWAMP.

"It's huge, construction waste especially can be recycled very easily," he says. "Whether it's wood or whether it's shingles... we've got lots of opportunities to recycle that type of stuff, Penner Waste has done a good job and we want to continue to promote that."
