A Winkler women's shelter is bracing itself for possible strike action by its workers.

18 employees of Genesis House have voted in favour of strike action after contract negotiations failed to generate an agreement.

The workers are members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees.

No date has been set for strike action.

Genesis House Board Chair Darlene Hayward says they have drawn up some contingency plans in the event workers walk out.

Hayward says wages are at the center of the strike action.

She says the workers are asking more than the board can afford to give noting they have the fiscal responsibility to operate withing the funds that the board has.

Workers have been without a contract since March 2005.
