The Union representing workers at a women's shelter in Winkler wants the Province to properly compensate workers.

18 employees of Genesis House have voted to go on strike.

The main issue is wages.

Sheree Capar is with the Canadian Union of Public Employees.

Capar says family violence counselors at Genesis House are up to 42% behind in their wages compared to counselors at other shelters.

She says those kinds of salaries just do not work in today's world.

Capar says the threat of strike action is not aimed at the Genesis House Board of Directors or its executive director.

She says it's more about the province stepping up and properly compensating staff for the important work they do.
