Within a matter of hours the Winkler Fire Department were dispatched to two different house fires within the R.M of Stanley this weekend.

The first call came in just after 10:00 a.m on Saturday in Reinfeld. The homeowner had returned home and was met with thick black smoke after opening the front door. The fire had originated in the basement of the home, burning out the basement stairs, adding a further challenge for emergency responders.

Fire Prevention Officer Phil Dueck explains they were able to attack the fire using a piercing nozzle pushed through the mainfloor. When the fire had been extinguished firefighters were able to enter through a basement window. The incident is still under investigation.

A second house fire was called in at 2:24 P.M in Hochfeld. Winkler firefighters were dispatched to a fire that started after oil was left unattended on a stove.

"It did significant damage to the home," Dueck says, adding crews were able to make entry and extinguish the blaze.

He notes cooking oil will catch fire at 325 degrees celsius, "so it's not that hot," Dueck says.

"That is something we deal with on quite a regular basis. If you leave it unattended for a little while or forget, it's not at all hard to have that get away and become a fire," he says.
