It's not every day a former Major League Baseball player is in Southern Manitoba, especially one that is on the field conducting clinics for young baseball players.

That happened yesterday when past Boston Red Sox and Montreal Expos pitcher Bill “Spaceman” Lee was in Altona as part of the Canada-Cuba Goodwill Tour. The community is hosting a team of 14 and 15 year old Cuban baseball players, and Bill has been part of the group and in fact the Tour program since essentially it's beginning.

I caught up with him in the dugout just before the afternoon session of the clinic began, and asked him how he became involved with the Canada-Cuba Goodwill Tour.

Bill “Spaceman” Lee, in the respective team Hall of Fame's for the Boston Red Sox and Montreal Expos, and is considered one of the best lefty pitchers of his era.

The former major leaguer played from 1969 to 1982, and for years has been traveling North America and the world promoting the game. He now spends a lot of his time, just like Monday in Altona, conducting baseball clinics for young players as he participates in the Canada-Cuba Goodwill Tour.
