Recruiting more doctors remains a priority for the Altona and Area Health Board.
The local clinic is operating with 4 physicians on staff. Board spokesman Ted Klassen says their long term goal is to have a total of 7 physicians working out of the clinic.
Klassen says their recruitment efforts have met with some success. The board was able to come to an agreement with Dr. Kyle Winning from Morden, who will join the clinic in June, 2013. He adds they are also in negotiations with another physician from outside of Canada, however, that may take some time to finalize.
Last month, the Seinger Government announced it would fund 14 additional family medicine residencies in an effort to meet the need for more doctors in our province. Klassen says he supports that move, but admits, there's no guarantee any of those 14 future doctors will practice medicine in rural Manitoba.
