Severe Weather Causes Widespread Damage
Monday, 25 June 2007
A number of twisters touched down in southwestern Manitoba on Saturday causing extensive damage.

Residents of the Boissevain area rallied around neighbours in need.

The storm on Saturday caused severe damage to a number of farm yards north of town.

Damage was reported in many RM’s across western Manitoba.

More than 40 volunteers showed up at Blaine and Neta Mains farm to put a new roof on their house on Sunday.
Mennonite Disaster Services has put a call out for volunteers.

If you can help call Henry Dueck at 534-6900.

Meantime a state of emergency may be declared after the severe weather on Saturday night.

5 twisters were reported.

Ross Tycoles is the reeve for the RM of Pipestone.

He says up to 5 farms north of Reston suffered heavy damage.

The system moved into neighbouring RM’s of Sifton, Cameron and Whitewater.

Tycoles has been talking with Sifton Reeve George Harrison about the damage.

He says there are a lot of trees that need to be cleaned up and so they are talking about declaring a state of emergency to get some help with that.

Heavy rain and hail was reported.

In Kola, west of Virden, 2 inches of rain fell in 20 minutes causing many basements to flood.

And a tornado Saturday night did severe damage in the area south of Ninette and Baldur.

It tore up 5 camper trailers at Pleasant Valley and then demolished the farm of Norman Derochers and did extensive damage at the farm of Allan Bramwell.

The Derochers family had scrambled into the basement about 30 seconds before the tornado pulled the house from its foundation.

Environment Canada confirms the tornado south of Baldur was an F-3.

Finally an estimated 1,500 cottages in the Whiteshell were damaged in thunderstorms Saturday night.

Manitoba Conservation reports Betula, Big Whiteshell, Red Rock and White Lake were the hardest hit.

We're advised not to travel in the Whiteshell at this time due to downed power lines and trees.

Conservation officials say it could be Friday before all the power is restored.
