HPV Immunization Program Starting
Saturday, 20 September 2008
The province's voluntary provincewide HPV vaccinations for grade 6 girls will be implemented this fall.

HPV, or the Human Papilloma Virus is the leading cause of cervical cancer in women and around 45 manitobans are diagnosed with the disease a year.

Dr. Shelly Buchan, medical officer of health for RHA Central says information on the vaccine will be coming home with girls in grade 6 along with conscent forms.

Buchan adds the process in which the vaccines will be administered is similar to that of vaccines already offered in schools.

She says parents have the option of opting in or out of the program.

Buchan notes  when considering whether or not to vaccinate your daughter consider these two things: read the provided information carefully and remember this is one of the first vaccines able to prevent chronic diseases such as cancer in the future.

More information on the vaccine is available at the Manitoba Health website or by calling Health Links.
