Whips pitcher Abe Friesen in action during Winkler's semi-final win Friday night

Abe Friesen tossed a four hit, one run complete game to help the Winkler Whips defeat the Baldur Regals 4-1 and advance to the Border West Baseball League's championship series.

"I felt pretty good right from the beginning. Thanks to Scheffy (Manager Jeremy Matuszewski) who stuck with me on the mound," said the 50 year old pitcher, who is also playing his first year of competitive baseball.

Baldur got the games first run in the second inning, but in the bottom of the third the Whips brought home three runs to take the lead and never looked back. Winkler added another insurance run in the sixth, to help them win the third and final game of the best-of-three semi final series.

"We just didn't get enough hits. We always seemed to get two outs before we got anything rolling there. We just couldn't get the big hit at the right time," said Regals manager Gord Dearsley.

Bryan Evans got the start on the bump for the Regals. He gave up all four runs, on eight hits, walked a pair while striking out three batters. Meanwhile, Friesen was dealing a gem on the hill for the Whips.

Winkler will await the winner of the other semi final between the first place Pilot Mound Pilots and Cartwright Twins. Game three of that semi final series goes Monday afternoon in Pilot Mound with first pitch at 4:00 p.m.
