A former Altona man plead guilty to numerous abuse-related charges in Provincial Court on Monday. The case dates back to November, 2014 when the Altona Police Service received a complaint of domestic abuse involving the forty year old man’s wife, children and pets over a twenty year period. Some of the assaults took place in front of the man's children. Police charged the man with several criminal code offences which included Assault with A Weapon, two counts of Common Assault, Injuring and Endangering Animals, Mischief and three counts of uttering threats.

The abuse included several assaults against the man's wife, the killing of a dog by hanging and seriously injuring a cat. The abuse was carried on to the children where the father threatened to run them over with his car. Police were told of other allegations where the accused held a running chainsaw to within and inch of his wife’s throat. This was also witnessed by the children.

Meantime, prior to Monday's court appearance, police received further complaints from the victims alleging several other occasions of abuse. The victim’s wife alleges that he tried to hang her in their basement.

Upon the advice of the Crown Attorney, Altona Police has laid an additional twelve charges against the man. The list includes Attempted Murder, Assaults and Utter Threats. These allegations have not been proven in court. The accused has been remanded into custody at the Manitoba Remand Center and will not be named due to the ages of the children.

Altona Police Service has also charged a fifty-four year old man with various sexual abuse charges.

The victim, a 25 year old woman, reported the crime on October 24th and explained to police that the abuse spanned over several days. She outlined that the accused provided her with pills daily which made her feel drowsy, then when she would regain consciousness the man was allegedly sexually assaulting her. When she would not co-operate, the woman was allegedly choked nearly unconscious. When she would attempt to leave, the man allegedly would not allow her. The victim and the accused were known to each other prior to the sexual assaults occurring.
