A man is fighting for his life after a serious assault in Winkler Saturday night.  The assault took place just prior to midnight inside Valley Bowling Lanes. The victim, a 25 year old male resident of Saskatchewan remains on life support at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg at this time.

Police say an argument over an unpaid debt between two males well known to each other, turned violent.  The victim was struck several times with a pool cue and was reported to be unconscious.

The first police officer arriving on scene immediately began CPR, while other responding officers began gathering the necessary information to locate the suspect.  With the assistance of a witness, who followed the fleeing suspect, he was apprehended by police at 7-Eleven a short time later.

Justin Leslie Bird, 29, also from Saskatchewan is being held in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre and is scheduled to appear in Portage court today on charges of Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Controlled Substance.
