The 3rd Annual Culture Fest took part at the Bethel Heritage Park in Winkler over the weekend. Crowds came from all over the Pembina Valley to partake in activities throughout Saturday morning and afternoon, and learn more about the 20 different cultures that were represented in the community.

The Philippines, China, Congo and First Nations, were some of the participating cultures that had booths set up in the park. There, cultures could showcase their art, clothing, food and music to families and passersby that were interested. Other activities and entertainment held throughout the day included returning favourites such as dancing and singing along with new events, like the Indian Fashion Show.

Adashnee Pather, Organizer of the Indian Fashion Show, explains why it's important to educate the community on the differences of outfits and how it's tied into the Indian culture.

“People don't understand that this is what they wear. This is the only thing they have worn all their lives. So it means if they are wearing a certain type of pants with their dress, that they come from a certain part of India. It's not because they don't want to wear jeans and t-shirts, it's because this is what they grew up with, and they want to retain their identity.”

With more cultures on display than previous years, Miriam James-Decker, Integration Worker at Regional Connections, says she was blown away by how the day went, and was amazed to see Culture Fest come to fruition.

“It was surreal. It was just amazing to see the different cultures interacting with each other. Everyone is so proud of their heritage, but yet, so peaceful together and so interested in one anothers' cultures. It's just really beautiful.”

She notes that while Culture Fest is a great way to improve cross-cultural relationships, she hopes that they can expand the event to include even more cultures for next year.
