Water drainage in Altona has been an issue the town has been grappling with all summer long.

The town's sewer system has been challenged by frequent heavy rainfall events which have flooded a number of streets. Some of that water has pooled in a few residential neighbourhoods and has taken some time to drain away.

Mayor Melvin Klassen says it's been a rather unique kind of year as far as weather is concerned.

"Our drain system can usually handle a normal kind of rainfall, but this year, because the rains are so intense, some drainage problems have occurred," said mayor Melvin Klassen. "The areas where water seems to collect are in some of our newer developments, like the northwest part of town. That's where we seem to have some problems."

The town is encouraging developers to take some action and pump any excess water off of undeveloped lots where some of that rain is collecting. Klassen says eliminating standing water is also key to their mosquito control program.

"The fact that these spots are there is causing mosquito problems. Mosquitoes don't need a lot of time to hatch if the conditions are right."

Altona has been fogging for mosquitoes just about every week this summer. Those efforts have had limited success, however, due to heavy thundershower activity on an almost weekly basis this season.
