The Morden sign on the east side of the city can now receive the finishing touch after a slogan was chosen by residents voting.

"City of Discovery" is officially Morden's new greeting message. The announcement was made early Tuesday afternoon.

"I am happy [this] is a slogan that I think the city can be proud of," said Peter Cantelon, executive director of the Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre. Cantelon was a committee member during the selection process, and he thinks the community made a strong choice to help with Morden's expanding tourism goals.

"It can be utilized in a number of different ways in terms of tourism and development," he said.

The second place option "dream. discover. develop." missed by a hair with 136 votes compared to 138 for the winning slogan.

There is no official word on when the new slogan will be affixed to the sign, but Cantelon suggested softer lighting be used to illuminate the new city greeting.

A new slogan for the highway 3 sign was needed after the initial option, "Sponsored by Bonnie and John Buhler", was severely criticized by a number of people from the community. An electronic petition was even started to have the slogan removed which was signed by approximately 300 people.

John and Bonnie Buhler called the City of Morden about the slogan, and asked that it be taken down. Shortly after, it was decided that if a new greeting was going to be chosen, it should be done by the people of Morden. This began a process of submissions, sifting through the options, and finally a vote.
