Students from Borderland and Red River Valley School Divisions took part in a Trades Camp initiative through the month of November. The two school divisions received a grant from Apprenticeship Manitoba that was used to provide hands on trades experience for middle years students in eight vocational programs operated by the Red River Technical Vocational Area.

A series of five trades camps were organized through the RRTVA office. Students from Gretna, Altona, Morris, and Rosenort traveled to Altona on the weekend to experience the Sustainable Energy and Electrical programs. Students helped construct wind mills in an effort to create renewable energy.

"I thought it would be something good to do with my time, take a look at what career opportunities are out there," said Matteo Clayton, a grade seven student.

The group of 16 students also attended the Auto Body and Welding programs offered in Morris on November 12, and participated in Culinary Arts and Building Construction Programs on October 29.

"I would definitely recommend this to other middle year students because it's a lot of fun and gives you a good idea of what's out there jobs wise," said grade seven student Emma Pauls.

Students spend half a day at eight vocational programs offered by RRTVA for some hands-on experience in each trade. The Trade Camp experience will finish up on Saturday, November 26 at GVC Tec in Winkler where students will experience the Heavy Duty Diesel and Horticulture/Landscaping programs.
