The City of Winkler is up to over a dozen solar-powered crosswalks throughout the community's walking path network.

"The thing is they work so nice," Winkler Mayor Martin Harder says. "We're pretty happy with them, especially in the school areas."

He notes drivers are paying special attention to the crossings, adding they require little maintenance.

The city began installing the lights three years ago, each at the cost of approximately $13,000. The installation of crosswalk lights on Grandeur Ave. were bumped up last fall after two young girls were struck by a vehicle while attempting cross at the pedestrian walkway. Previously the crosswalk was marked by painted lines and a pedestrian crossing sign.

The latest additions include a lighted crosswalk on the corner of Southview Drive and Linden Drive, as well as by local manufacturers Lode King on Canada St., and another at Triple E on Roblin Blvd. In both instances the businesses purchased the solar-powered lights themselves while the City of Winkler made the installation.
