African swine fever was a hot topic this week at Manitoba Pork's fall producer meetings.

Jenelle Hamblin is the group's manager of swine health programs.

"I think it would be fair to say that everyone...is definitely on high alert with African swine fever. The risk of disease transmission is definitely there. The world is a much smaller place and people are moving around and bringing things with them."

Hamblin notes that as of last week there were over 50 cases confirmed in China, adding the disease is moving very quickly and has entered multiple production systems. It has also moved into the European Union.

She says personal biosecurity here at home will be key to keeping the disease out of the country.
