The Soil Conservation Council of Canada wants you to think about soil health this week as part of it's annual awareness campaign.

The organization, which was started in the late 80's, is busy promoting National Soil Conservation Week.

Executive Director Jim Tokarchuck says there are many benefits to maintaining a healthy soil, in addition to providing a consistent supply of food.

"It removes greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, it helps to create situations where water is cleaned through filtration, through healthy soils," he commented. "It provides wildlife habitat, recreational habitat, and just that beautiful panoramic scenery you see on the Prairies."

As part of the awareness campaign, Tokarchuck is encouraging Canadians to bury a plain white piece of cotton in the soil and then check on it in a couple of months.

He says a healthy soil will eat away at the fabric, showing just how biologically active that soil is.
