The Manitoba Canola Growers Association (MCGA) held its Annual General Meeting last week at CropConnect.

President Chuck Fossay looked back on the past year.

"It was a very good year," he said. "Our acres were pretty close to what we normally expect, just a hair over three million acres. The yield, we set a new provincial record. I believe it was something like 44.1 bushels was the average across the province and I know for myself and for many other farmers, it was actually probably a record year for production. On my farm I think we averaged probably well over 52-54 bushels. That target the Canola Council of Canada has set of 52 bushels per acre by 2025, is I think very much achievable."

Fossay expects canola acres to remain relatively flat for this upcoming growing season, somewhere in the range of 3 to 3.4 million.

During the AGM, MCGA honoured two outgoing board members. Ed Rempel and Brian Chorney will be leaving, being replaced by John Sandborn and Pam Baily, who is the group's first female director.

Three resolutions were passed at the meeting dealing with reducing the cost of seed, informing farmers about the dangers of tight crop rotations and opposing end point royalties.
