The Manitoba Forage and Grassland Association believes the province needs a clearer focus on soil health for carbon capture.

The group released it's official position this week on the government's made-in-Manitoba carbon pricing strategy, giving seven key recommendations.

MFGA Finance Chair Ryan Boyd says among other things, the group would like to see more carbon bench-marking within the province on agricultural soils.

He notes there's still lots of research and testing that needs to be done on putting carbon back into the soil.

"We think there are opportunities to add some diversity to the annual cropping systems, possibly with cover crops and that sort of thing," said Boyd. "This is a relatively new idea but we think it does have merit here at home in Manitoba."

According to Boyd, as carbon is added to the soil, soil structure improves, greatly enhancing water infiltration and water holding capacity of the landscape.
