Crops have really taken off over the past few days thanks to some recent heat and moisture.

Laryssa Stevenson is a production specialist with Manitoba Pulse and Soybean Growers (MPSG).

"Soybeans are at the first to third trifoliate stage and for the most part the first in-crop herbicide passes have been made," she said. "Dry beans are slightly behind soybeans, at the first to second trifoliate stage and pea seeding ranges anywhere from the 10-node stage to the flower bud formation."

Stevenson says unfortunately a severe hail storm hit crops last week along Highway 23 from about Minto all the way to Somerset. She says although there was severe defoliation to the crop, if any of the plant's growing points are still intact regrowth is possible.

Research has shown that if defoliation occurs at early vegetative stages, decent yield potential can be maintained.
