This Saturday, Small Farms Manitoba is holding a tour to connect consumers with producers. The farm tour will make three stops in the Treherne area, including an organic market garden, an on-farm flour mill, and an on-farm butcher shop.

Kalynn Spain, founder of Small Farms Manitoba, says this is their second tour for the summer, and they hope to still have a couple more.

"What I wanted to do was really just get people out to the farms, and meet the farmers and learn about where their food is coming from, and find out more about what that farm does, and maybe purchase even something at the end of it," she says.

Spain says they had a great response from their first tour, which was held in July, and covered Stoneybrook Creamery, Redpoll Farms, and Nature's Farm.

"It was really interesting for them to see where it all happened, and then to buy the product and bring it home with them and have that souvenir at the end of the day," she says. "I just heard positive feedback all around, people were really excited they took that time out of their day and out of their weekend."

Spain says for the upcoming tour, she chose a couple of organic farms because she hopes it will get people thinking about the work that goes into organic certification.

"Thinking about, why organic grain? Why is it different? Why is it special? Why do farmers charge more for it? All those sorts of things. So those questions come up, and people learn about that, and they learn about the value of that food," she says.
