The Altona/Rhineland Fire Department is expecting to have a new chief in place in the next month or so.

That's the hope of Altona Mayor Melvin Klassen, who is part of the search committee.

Former Chief Irv Braun retired earlier this summer, after 19 years on the job.

Klassen says they've narrowed the search down to about three candidates.

“Because of holidays, it's stalled somewhat,” he explained. “We have been interviewing several candidates and I'm hoping that we can make a decision within the next two weeks.”

Deputy Chief Barry Friesen is currently handling the responsibilities until a new chief is in place.

The Altona/Rhineland fire chief is a full-time paid position.
