Garth Buchko & Altona Mayor Mel Klassen

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers opened up the 2013 season on the road. This wasn't just any road trip however, as the Bombers visited communities across Southern Manitoba as part of a six day kickoff relay to celebrate the opening of Investors Group Field. The Relay began in Portage followed by stops in Altona, Morden, Winkler, Brandon, and Steinbach before returning to Winnipeg on Thursday.

Blue Bomber President and CEO Garth Buchko explained why they decided to organize the kickoff relay.

Several fans from each community had the opportunity to carry the Investors Group Field inaugural game ball 110 yards along the relay route.  Bomber fans also had the opportunity to have their picture taken with the Grey Cup and with team alumni Joe Poplawski, Harold Neufeld, Dave Donaldson, Kelly Butler and more.

Buchko talked about what made the celebration special.

Investors Group Field is much more than the home of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Garth Buchko talked about who else will be using the new stadium.

The Blue Bombers will welcome the Toronto Argonauts to their new home on July 19th followed by the Calgary Stampeders on July 26th. The Sir Paul McCartney concert is the stadium's next big non-sporting event. He comes to Winnipeg on August 12th.
