The board members of Many Hands Resource Centre held their annual general meeting Tuesday evening to reflect on last year's success and the next year's opportunities.

A couple ideas floating in the board's minds include bringing a car co-op coming to Morden for people who may not be able to afford their own vehicle, and a "library of things" with household items instead of books.

"You could go to the library of things, check it out, use it, and return it. It's a way to encourage sustainability in our community so that everyone doesn't need to own one of something they rarely use," said board chair, Heather Francis.

She added that the library of things would also give people access to items they may not be able to afford.

Both these ideas are still in the early stages, and the board is determining if they are even feasible for Morden. For a car co-op, Francis shares met with the Peg-City car co-op in Winnipeg to understand how that group makes the program work.

"I'm envisioning a small local set-up, but we'll see where the research takes us," she said.

A long-running program of Many Hands is the weekly "Community Kitchen". It's a place for people to gather and build relationships while enjoying a nutritious meal they might otherwise not be able to have. The program also teaches people how to shop for healthy groceries and to cook with ingredients with which some people may not be familiar.

"We've heard many times that some of the participants say this is a big highlight of their week, and if for some reason it has to be cancelled, it's a depressing thing. They rely on the social connection and the friends they've made," Francis shared.

Many Hands Resource Centre started to empower people and families to eat sustainability and build relationships in the community.
