RCMP suspect speed may have been a factor in a fatal two-vehicle collision Monday morning in the Municipality of Pembina.

According to Manitoba RCMP, members of the Pembina Valley detachment were called to the scene at the crest of a hill on PR 2 North, between PR 41 West and PR 43 West, around 8 a.m., and discovered an SUV laying on its roof and on fire in the middle of the road. Investigation revealed the eastbound SUV and a westbound pick-up truck hauling an empty cattle trailer, collided head on.

The 19 year old male driver of the SUV was pronounced deceased at the scene. RCMP say it is unknown if he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The 33 year old male driver of the pick-up was brought to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Both were from the area and were the only occupants of their vehicles.

RCMP say alcohol was not a factor in the collision.

A RCMP Forensic Collision Reconstructionist is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
