Gateway Resources in Winkler went on parade recently to connect with participants while they keep day programming on hold due to the current health situation.

"To at least greet all the faces we are missing very much," CEO Kim Nelson explains. "While we're not seeing them every day we're definitely thinking about them and really want them to return... we're waiting for that day to happen, just as they are."

She notes they receive daily calls from local residents inquiring if they can return. However, Nelson says safety remains their top concern.

In the meantime, their critical residential services continue. Gateway provides 24/7 support to numerous individuals in Morden and Winkler, "the staff are supporting individuals who've had their lives turned upside down, facilitating daily living and adjusting to a new normal."

"All the direct support professionals employed at Gateway go above and beyond every day to improve the quality of lives of the individuals we support," she adds.

Gateway is a member of Abilities Manitoba, a network of agencies that advocate for services for people with intellectual disabilities. As part of their work, they're advocating for better wages for direct support professionals.

Nelson notes better wages and recognition will only improve their ability to attract and keep staff in the industry.
