Carla Hrycyna, host of Golden West's Lawn and Garden Journal, is offering up a few tips on how to properly water hanging baskets and potted plants as we head into a hot and sunny weekend.

During these hot spells, Hrycyna says people might find themselves watering their baskets and pots twice a day - once in the morning and again in the afternoon. Instead, she suggests submerging the planter in a reservoir of water.

"I find that sometimes, when you're watering from the top, the root ball gets dry, and what happens is the soil will pull away from the sides a bit, and as you water you see this rush coming from the bottom of the pot thinking that you have given it enough moisture," she explained. "But, if you realize that the soil is like dry land and you get that flash flood, it runs across the surface, it runs down the sides of the pot and down the bottom without wicking and getting that moisture to the core of that entire root ball."

The solution, according to Hrycyna is to place the basket or planter into a bucket of water and offering it that nice long drink.

"You will tell when it's ready to hang, it's going to be a little bit of muscle work to get that pot up on its hanger, but you that then the plants have drawn in the moisture that they need and it's going to give them a little bit of excess in the day ahead in that heat," she added.

Environment Canada is forecasting daytime highs this weekend between 30 and 33 degrees Celsius.
