Winkler Fire Department was called out to the SWAMP landfill north of Winkler Monday morning. The call came in around 5:40 a.m. according to the department's Facebook page.
According to Chief Richard Paetzold, it was garbage that ignited.
Tankers from both Morden Fire and Rescue and Altona/Rhineland Emergency Services were called in to assist, for a total of four tankers hauling water to the site.
Firefighters battled bitterly cold temperatures this morning, hovering around -22, with wind chill values in the -30s. Paetzold says crews were rotated in light of the conditions.
