The Winkler Flyers will play a home-and-home against the Portage Terriers on the opening weekend of the 2021-22 Manitoba Junior Hockey League season.

The Flyers and Terriers will meet Saturday, September 18th in Winkler and then play again the following night at Stride Place in Portage.

The Terriers were the last team to capture the Turnbull Trophy.

Portage beat the Swan Valley Stampeders 3-2 in overtime in the seventh and deciding game of the 2018-2019 final.

The 2019-20 season was cancelled in mid-March because of COVID-19. The Flyers trailed the Virden Oil Capitals two games to one in the opening round of the MJHL playoffs when the season was shutdown.

The 2020-21 season was suspended in November and then eventually cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The Flyers, Terriers, Winnipeg Blues, Steinbach Pistons, Selkirk Steelers and Winnipeg Freeze comprise the MJHL’s East Division.

The West Division includes the Oil Capitals, Stampeders, Waywayseecappo Wolverines, OCN Blizzard, Neepawa Titans and Dauphin Kings.

Each team will play 40 games within their division and 14 games against teams in the other division. The season will begin with 10 weeks on home-and-home divisional play.

The Flyers regular season finale is at home Saturday, March 12th against Portage.
