First Book Canada recently made a donation to Genesis House, a shelter for women and children at risk of domestic violence. The organization has supported the shelter many times in the past.

"It had been a while now since we heard from them. Through Healthy Child Manitoba we got a note that they were coming back through Winnipeg and had books for people, so if we were registered and wanted to sign up they would supply us safely with some books," says Ang Braun, Executive Director.

She adds, the car load was quite large at roughly 227 books, although they weren't allowed to pick them like they've done in the past.

"Because First Book comes around fairly often, we will be able to keep some for ourselves but we will also be sharing with families. As part of our other programming in our outreach when it comes to follow-up groups - we have another program that's starting up shortly - just randomly we'll be able throw in a book for the moms to bring home for their kids."

Braun says the timing is perfect as kids get ready to head back to school and dive back into education and learning in the classroom, and at home.

"Going to the library, I remember looking forward to that as a kid . . . When they brought them into the shelter we were just all thrilled. It's kind of like Christmas for us as well, looking through the books. They really do go all across the age ranges."

The books are selected to start from the earliest developmental age so they can provide something for everyone coming through their doors, she adds.
