The Greg Ens Memorial Park in Winkler is now home to three, larger-than-life hockey players made of concrete.

Ens was a well-known Winkler businessman, community builder and avid local hockey supporter. His father, Al Ens, who attended the unveiling ceremony, says the statues are fitting given his son’s involvement in the sport.

“Greg spent many, many hours in the rink as a player, first in minor hockey, then high school hockey and then Flyers hockey. He coached a lot of hockey here with the young people, many of who are now playing junior hockey. His motto was, 'I may not make professional hockey players out of these young boys, but I hope to make professional people out of them.' It was more important for him to develop good character men than hockey players.”

t about details, but a personal expression based on emotion and movement. He felt honored to be chosen for the project.

“Because this is the first and only city where I came from Germany to Canada, I lived here for twelve years. I met my wife here. My two sons were born here. I bought my first house here. Today is like a memory for me, for appreciation for me, for community. [The sculptures] will be here forever. So thank you very much.”

The Winkler Horticulture Society spearheaded the creation of the park.

Assistant Chair Betty Klassen says they knew Hubert was the right artist for the job from the start.

“I went into his house, he had a tiny little house, and it was full of gorgeous pieces of art which he made. Really, they were made out of scrap wood and metal. And his garage was filled with junk! I said, how does this work? He's just got an amazing mind!”

“When we thought of this [project] we just right away thought of Andreas,” added Klassen. “We just put our trust in him and he came through big time. Just big time. I think it's just amazing.”

Klassen says their volunteer organization would not have been able to tackle a project of this nature without the amazing support they received from the community.

Future plans for the park include a shelter, a wood burner for roasting wieners, a walking path, more shrubs and a few more light fixtures.
