It will affect 1 in 5 Canadians, but most of us don't know much about it.

Mental illness is one of the most common afflictions we face, ranging from mild depression to severe schizophrenia.

The Canadian Mental Health Association is hoping to raise awareness of mental illness at its Heroes Luncheon, October 5th in Portage.

Regional Manager Leisa Miness explains the seminar is suppose to celebrate the victory of people who live with a mental illness or have been affected by it.

There are five categories that included the individuals who live with it, friends and family, volunteers, mental health professionals, and the organization or business.

Nomination forms and ticket information are available at the CMHA office in Portage.

The deadline for nominations is September 8th.
