The reeve for the R.M. of Stanley says last week's announcement of a $64.4 million expansion to the Boundary Trails Health Centre, is the best news in a long time.

Morris Olafson says, since the time he became reeve for the R.M. of Stanley, the hospital expansion is something he's wanted to see happen for the region.

Olafson says he didn't have a big part, but he was involved in a group that worked to get this expansion done. "Lo and behold, here it is. Wow! We're going to be a hub for Manitoba, for so many things from this," said Olafson. "I just applaud all the people that have worked to get this done."

The expansion includes, and significantly builds upon, a project advanced by the Boundary Trails Health Centre Foundation and other local community leaders, with the Foundation committing support for the project.

Morden Mayor Brandon Burley also shared his thoughts on Health and Seniors Care Minister Audrey Gordon's announcement. Burley says the announcement the Province is investing in health care in Southern Manitoba is good news.

"We know that it will lead to a substantial increase, not only in the diagnostic services and the in-region health care provision, but also in jobs, both in the short term and long term care. We're very excited to the province for making this announcement, and the prospect of moving forward a project that's been in the works for quite some time now."

The project consists of two stages, with a new, two-storey community services building and inpatient building additions being constructed first. Construction on the new building adjacent to the current health centre, is expected to begin by Summer 2022.
