Money laundering is the crime of turning dirty money clean.

Corporal Chris Fearn of the R.C.M.P.'S integrated proceeds of crime division says dirty money is usually accumulated through the illegal drug trade.

He says people in our financial system make little use of large sums of money therefore need to find a way to make small amounts at a time legitimate.

Constable Kevin Halipchuck also of the Proceeds of Crime Division says large sums of dirty money are used to fund terrorists organizations.

He says the events of 9-11 helped raise awareness of that issue.

Information on money laundering was provided to Altona businesses on Thursday.

Halipchuck adds the goal of the seminar was to show merchants how to detect and report laundering.
