A Colorado low centred in the U-S is expected to drop some freezing drizzle and snow onto southern Manitoba this weekend.

A special weather statement has been issued calling for a mix of snow, freezing drizzle and relatively strong winds especially for those living closest to the American border, close to the centre of this system. "We're also expecting larger amounts of precipitation up along the Manitoba escarpment since the flow connected to a low is counterclockwise," said Natalie Hasell, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada. "That means we'll have winds from the northeast flowing into southern Manitoba and then that air will be forced to travel up the side of the escarpment."

The stormy weather is expected to stick around until Saturday evening and should clear up by Sunday.

Hasell said this weather system doesn't quite meet the criteria for a weather warning at this point. "Even it there are no warning criteria, this will be bad. Road conditions in particular are going to be difficult with icy conditions for sure...and we could have strong winds in some areas causing blowing snow which will further reduce visibility making driving conditions even more harder to deal with."

Hasell encourages motorists to have an emergency kit in the their vehicle throughout the winter months in the event they get stranded on a highway in stormy weather.
