It's evident through the outcome of Tuesday's 'Off Ice' fundraiser people care for Winkler's Central Station Community Centre, and their Winkler Flyers hockey team.

Members of the hockey team, coaching staff, and support staff were lifted onto the roof of the Central Station's future new home with the assistance of the Winkler Fire Department's ladder truck. Their rescue off of the roof was only secured once $40,000 in donations was raised.

Central Station is raising money to cover the costs of extensive renovations at its future space in the Main Plaza on Main Street, next to Red River College.

Bev Wiebe, Central Station's executive director said the overall budget for the entire renovation is $1.6 million. Prior to Tuesday's fundraiser, Wiebe noted they had already raised $680,000. With the money donated to help get the Flyers 'off the roof,' they're now at well over $700,000. Wiebe says they exceeded their goal for Tuesday, and by they end of the day, they had raised $61,120.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you! We could not do it without all of the volunteers, the Flyers, the Flyers staff, and everyone else for just showing up to support, it's just been amazing."

Central Station's future Main Plaza home will be a great space, said Wiebe. "It will be a big drop-in area, larger foodbank area, warehouse for the foodbank, and a large dining room, which we so badly need."

Wiebe noted they will be able to seat 240 in the new dining room.

"It was awesome, a great experience and unique environment," said Flyers Head Coach Justin Falk. "You want to do these types of events where you get your guys away from the rink and bond together through different experiences. What better way than being stranded on a roof and helping out a great organization in town like Central Station that's very near and dear to my heart, and to a lot people in this community's hearts."
