Forward Gavin McKenna of Whitehorse was chosen by the Medicine Hat Tigers with the first overall selection of the 2022 Western Hockey League Prospects Draft. McKenna had 23 goals and 42 assists in 35 games with the Rink Hockey Academy Kelowna U18 Prep team. The first Manitoban selected was forward Cole Temple of Brandon who went fifth overall to the Regina Pats. The Brandon Wheat Kings took forward Joby Baumuller of Wilcox, Saskatchewan with the 12th pick in round one. The Winnipeg Ice, who did not have a first, second or third round pick, took forward Ashton Brown of Sherwood Park 88th overall in round four. The Vancouver Giants selected defender Chloe Primerano with the 268th pick in the 13th round. The North Vancouver native became the first-ever female skater picked in the WHL, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League or Ontario Hockey League prospect drafts.


The Manitoba Junior Hockey League champion Dauphin Kings play their round robin opener today (1 p.m.) against the Central Canada Hockey League champion Ottawa Jr. Senators at the Centennial Cup National Junior "A" Hockey Championship in Estevan. Morden's Trent Crane & William Irvine and the Maritime Junior Hockey League champion Summerside Western Capitals face the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League champion Soo Thunderbirds at 5 p.m. The Flin Flon Bombers won their opener Thursday. Austin's Zak Smith had three assists as the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League finalists beat the Soo Thunderbirds 6-1.


Dylan Cozens scored three times as Canada defeated Kazakhstan 6-3 and improved to 4-0 at the World Men's Hockey Championship in Helsinki. Adam Lowry, Drake Batherson and Damon Severson also scored for the Canadians who face Switzerland on Saturday. Canada and Switzerland are tied for top spot in Group A.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers first pre-season game has been moved to Tuesday, May 31st. The defending Grey Cup champions were to play the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Regina on Victoria Day Monday but the Blue Bombers and Riders just started their respective training camps Thursday. The Canadian Football League and its players' union reached a tentative seven-year deal on a new collective bargaining agreement on Wednesday, ending the second strike in league history. The deal still has to be ratified by the league’s Board of Governors and CFLPA members. 


The Winnipeg Goldeyes completed a three game sweep of Sioux Falls. Reggie Pruitt Junior's grand slam highlighted Winnipeg's seven run first inning as the Fish downed the Canaries 10-1. The Goldeyes, who finished their season opening homestand with a 4-2 record, begin a 10-game road trip tonight when they face the Lake Country DockHounds in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.
