The Pembina Valley Orioles and Altona Bisons both played their Manitoba Junior Baseball League season openers Sunday. The Orioles split their doubleheader with the Elmwood Giants at Koskie Field. The Giants plated 10 runs in the third inning and won the opener 13-2. Mike Heppner and Darius Peters drove in two runs each as Pembina Valley took the second game 5-4. Altona dropped a pair of games to the Interlake Blue Jays at Quarry Park. The Bisons were held to just three hits and lost the opener 11-1. The Blue Jays took advantage of three Altona errors and took the second game 5-3. 


Central Energy played its Manitoba Premier Softball League season opener Sunday in the U15 Division. Energy defeated the Westman Magic 13-6 & 4-3. Central Energy lost 7-3 & 17-12 to Smitty's Terminators and saw their record fall to 4-2 in the U17 Division. 


The Winnipeg Goldeyes committed four errors and dropped an 8-2 decision to the Gary SouthShore RailCats at U.S. Steel Yard Sunday afternoon. Both Goldeyes runs came in the top of the sixth inning. Keith Torres drove in Brynn Martinez with a double to left field. It was Torres’ first professional hit and run batted in. He then scored on Max Murphy’s groundout to shortstop. The Fish will begin a three-game series against the defending American Association champion Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks tonight at Newman Outdoor Field.  


The Steinbach Pistons picked up their first win of the Centennial Cup Sunday night at Stride Place in Portage. Ian Amsbaugh had a goal and two assists as the Manitoba Junior Hockey League champions downed the Kam River Fighting Walleye 5-2. Landon Roberts and Ty Paisley had power play goals for the Pistons who have a 1-1-1 record. Steinbach netminder Dominik Wasik made 26 saves. The Pistons play their final preliminary round game Tuesday against the Battlefords North Stars. The host Portage Terriers are 2-0 and will meet the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League champions tonight. 


Canada has a 2-0 preliminary round record after downing Slovenia 5-2 Sunday at the World Hockey Championship in Latvia. MacKenzie Weegar had a goal and two assists for the Canadians who face Slovakia today. Michael Carcone, Pierre-Olivier Joseph, Milan Lucic and Jack McBain also scored for Canada. Devon Levi made 22 saves. 


Winkler Storm ll lost its Manitoba Major Soccer League season opener in Division Three. Winkler fell 3-1 Sunday to Punjab FC. Koen Unruh had the lone goal for the Storm. 


It's day two of Winnipeg Blue Bombers main camp. Today's practice session is from 10:15 a.m. - 12:35 p.m. The Bombers added wide receiver Braxton Westfield, defensive tackle Julius Turner, offensive lineman Jakub Szott and punter Jamieson Sheahan to the roster. Running back TaZhawn Henry, quarterback Cooper Callis, offensive lineman Tyler Grisolia, punter Chris MacLean, kicker Marc Orozco, defensive backs Cedrick Lavigne, Jordan Brown, Tyrique McGhee, Karon Delince & Noah Hallett and receivers Michael O’Shea and Jaivon Heiligh were released. Defensive back Will Allen Jr. and defensive tackle O’Bryan Goodson were transferred to the suspended list while defensive end Thiadric Hansen and linebacker Kyrie Wilson were placed on the six-game injured list.
