The field is set for Golf Manitoba’s Provincial Match Play Championships June 1st to 4th at the Glendale Golf & Country Club in Winnipeg. Three members of the Carman golf club earned qualifying spots this past weekend at Glendale. Sam Sullivan was six-over par 78 Saturday and finished tied for 18th in the men’s qualifier. Ryan Orchard was 80 and survived a four-way playoff for the final three spots. 2022 Provincial Men’s and Provincial Junior Men’s champion Braxton Kuntz of Breezy Bend was four-under par 68 and earned medalist honours. India Young was eight-over par 80 and finished in fifth place in the women’s qualifier. 2022 Manitoba Junior champion Addison Kartusch of St. Charles won medalist honours with an even par 72. Jay Doyle of Niakwa earned senior men’s medalist with an even par 72. The top eight in the women’s division and top 32 in the men's and senior men’s divisions advance to the Match Play championship. The women’s and senior men’s qualifiers were suspended Saturday and completed Sunday morning. 


The Pembina Valley Orioles and Altona Bisons both split their doubleheaders Sunday. The Orioles lost 6-4 to Interlake and then beat the Blue Jays 3-1 at Arctic Field in Winkler. Christopher Peters and Owen Goertzen had two hits each in the opener. Johnny Martens went the distance and allowed just three hits and struck out eight in the second game of the twinbill. The Bisons beat the Carillon Sultans 9-4 and lost the second game 15-5 at A. D. Penner Park in Steinbach. Isaiah Letkeman, Carson Dubois and Jayden Gerbrandt had two rbi each for the Bisons in the opener. The Sultans plated 10 runs in the bottom of the second inning in game two. 


The Morden Thunder face La Broquerie’s Ecole St. Joachim today in Ile des Chenes. The winner will qualify for the Provincial High School Baseball Championship this week in Glenboro & Baldur. Northlands Parkway will meet the Thunder in Morden this afternoon and that winner will earn a spot in the Provincial High School Fastpitch Championship this weekend in Ile des Chenes.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes wrapped up their nine-game homestand with a 3-2 victory over the Sioux Falls Canaries. Winnipeg third baseman Dayson Croes went three-for-three at the plate and extended his hitting streak to 12 games. The Fish will open a six-game road trip Tuesday when they meet the Chicago Dogs. 


Sammy Blais scored twice and Winnipeg’s Peyton Krebs had two assists as Canada defeated Germany 5-2 in the gold medal game at the 2023 World Hockey Championship in Tampere, Finland. Lawson Crouse, Tyler Toffoli and Scott Laughton also scored for Canada. Samuel Montembeault made 26 saves. Adam Fantilli, considered one of the top prospects in the upcoming NHL Draft, joined Jonathan Toews as the only Canadian players to win gold at the World Junior Championship and the World Men’s Championship in the same year. It’s the 22nd time Canada has won gold at the IIHF World Championship.
