The Provincial Junior Varsity Volleyball Championships begin today. The Miller Aces are hosting the AAA girls championship in Altona. The Aces are in a Pool with Linden Christian, Neelin and Niverville. The Garden Valley Zodiacs got in as a wildcard and are in a Pool with Springfield, Churchill and R.D. Parker of Thompson. Northlands Parkway is hosting the AAA boys championship in Winkler. The Nighthawks are in a Pool with Steinbach Christian, R.D. Parker and St. John’s. The Zone 4 champion Zodiacs are in a Pool with Neelin, Springfield and Beliveau. The Rosenort Redhawks are at the A/AA championships. Rosenort girls are in Russell and are in a Pool with Gilbert Plains, Gabrielle Roy and Reston. Rosenort boys are in Hamiota and are in a Pool with MacGregor, Goose Lake and Gabrielle Roy. The Morris Mavericks qualified as a wildcard and are also in Hamiota. The Mavs are in a Pool with Warren, Carberry and Prairie Mountain.


The Miller Aces and Carman Cougars were winners in the Zone 4 High School Hockey League. Reece Fehr had two goals and an assist as Miller downed Northlands Parkway 5-2. Jaxson Heide, Gavin Wiens and Tyson Tarnick also scored for the Aces. Jordan Knelsen and Carter Unger replied for the Nighthawks. Ryan Orchard scored his second goal of the game with 9:45 left in the third period and Ethan Wilde potted the go-ahead goal nine seconds later as Carman shaded Garden Valley 6-5. Owen Rey, Josh Hiebert and Ryan Penner also scored for the Cougars. Jeffrey Holomay had a pair of goals for GVC while the rest went to Philip Franz, Justin Hildebrand and Brayden Froese.


Zach Benson scored the go-ahead goal 5:16 into the third period as the Winnipeg Ice shaded the Lethbridge Hurricanes 3-2. Ty Nash and Connor McClennon with his 17th of the season also scored for the Ice.


The Winnipeg Jets gave up three third period goals and lost 6-1 to the Minnesota Wild in St. Paul. Kyle Connor had the lone goal for the Jets. Marcus Foligno scored twice for the Wild.


Canada lost 1-0 to Belgium in their Group Stage opener at the World Cup in Qatar. Michy Batshuayi scored in the 44th minute for Belgium. Canada had a chance to take the lead in the 10th minute. Alphonso Davies’ penalty attempt was stopped by Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. Canada’s next match is Sunday against Croatia.


Manitoba champions Zachary Wasylik has a 4-0 record and Lisa Birchard is 3-1 at the 2022 Everest Curling Club Championships at the Ice Palace in the West Edmonton Mall.
