The weekend's warm weather brought on a significant spring melt to the Pembina Valley. The much-needed moisture, for the upcoming year in Morden, saw Lake Minnewasta's water levels increase.

Deputy City Manager of Operations for the City Of Morden, Santokh Randawa, shared the good news.

Morden Residents are urged to use extreme caution around the lake at this time.

"This weekend, we gained about one foot of water in the lake, so now the lake is 12 feet 11 inches (below normal supply level). Last week it was at 13 feet 11 inches." However, he noted there is no overflow from the lake into the Dead Horse Creek yet. "There's no flow going from the lake downstream right now, but it's expected that the lake will fill and there will be an overflow of about 3,000-acre-feet to 5,000-acre-feet of water in the coming weeks."

He added the water could be at an overflow level as early as later next week.

There is a certain amount of water level increase in the Dead Horse Creek due to natural snowmelt, but Randawa expects that will pass before overflow at Lake Minnewasta will add to it.

Randawa remains cautiously optimistic that lake levels could return to a normal level before summer, but indicated it is too early to tell and says it depends on a few uncontrolled factors that are not predictable.
