Spring cleaning is in full swing as crews in Altona work to tidy the town following another winter season.

Public works manager, Clint Derksen, says the street sweeper is out clearing the roads of sand and gravel left behind after the snow melt. The frost is slowly moving out of the ground and crews are also trying to sweep off the boulevards, but Derksen says this week's rain may have slowed that process.

"We'll be out there as often as we can, getting as much of that done over the next few weeks," he said.

Crews have also been busy repairing potholes and street cracks, and that work will be ongoing. Overall, Derksen says the town's roads fared reasonably well this past winter compared to last year.

However, the season seems to have taken a toll on some young trees that line Altona's boulevards.

Derksen says snow clearing efforts may have played a role in bending the saplings.

"We lost a few more trees than normal this year," he added. "I think it's just due to more snow accumulation and I think they were knocked over because they were invisible in the snowbank."

A tally will be taken of the damaged trees and plans are in the works to replace them.
