A garage sustained major fire damage after a Monday morning blaze on 10th Street in Winkler.

Winkler Fire Department was called to the scene at 6:55 a.m., and Chief Richard Paetzold tells PembinaValleyOnline, when crews arrived, they found the attached garage fully involved, and the flames threatening the house.

Firefighters were able to stop the fire as it was entering the house through a failing door, and then proceeded to extinguish it.

The house sustained some exterior fire damage, but it was mostly contained to interior smoke damage.

There were no injuries in the incident, with Paetzold noting the home’s smoke detectors alerted the occupants to evacuate.

The cause remains under investigation.

Crews were also called out later in the day, around 2:30 p.m. to fire alarms sounding on Boundary Trail.

Just over an hour after that, at 3:47 p.m., crews were called out again, this time to a small fire at Dollarama located at the far north end of Main Street in Winkler. Paetzold says the business's sprinkler system suppressed the fire until firefighters were able to extinguish it.
