Winkler Police Service report a number of incidents that occurred last week involved alcohol or drugs.

On July 13, at approximately 3:20 a.m., police were dispatched to the report of a single-bicycle accident involving a male and female. Police arrived on the scene, noted substantial damage to the bicycle, and found both parties to be highly intoxicated and uncooperative. They were both arrested under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act and transported to the hospital for assessment of their injuries, during which time they were combative with police and paramedics. The male was later released from police custody and the female was transported to the Winkler Police Service where she was lodged until sober. No charges were laid as a result of this incident.

On July July 18, at approximately 8:45 a.m., police received a report of an intoxicated and upset individual walking in the area of Royal Crescent. Officers responded and located the male in a parking lot in the 200 block of Royal Crescent. When the male saw the patrol car, he immediately became highly agitated, yelling and swearing at police while making obscene gestures. Police attempted to speak with the male who began aggressively advancing on officers while demanding that they shoot him. At this time, the male was safely taken into custody under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act. The male, who admitted to recent cocaine use, was held until he was sober at which time he was released without charges.

On July 19, a complaint was received regarding a suspected impaired driver. Police located the suspect vehicle proceeded to conduct a traffic stop, and while speaking with the driver noted the odour of liquor on his breath. He complied with a demand for a breath sample which resulted in a 'Fail' reading. The male was released by way of an Immediate Roadside Prohibition, which carried a fine of $700, a 90-day driver’s license suspension, and a 30-day vehicle impoundment. He was also issued a ticket for Unlawful transportation of liquor in a vehicle, which carries a fine of $237.
